Maintenance Routine

Wind Turbines have an average lifespan of 30 years and typically require maintenance at least once every two years. However, frequency of these visits will depend on the type of turbine, its age, where it is installed, amount of energy produced, type of axis i.e. horizontal vs. vertical, etc. Operators use a strategy of preventative and predictive maintenance to keep the machine working efficiently and as part of their warranty coverage.

Preventative maintenance requires regular inspections and and a program of routine maintenance to detect potential issues before they become major problems. Predictive is essentially risk assessing your turbine on what could go wrong and fix issues before they occur. This is done using sensors to monitor various aspects such as speed, vibration and temperature. Our software programs analyse the data points of your machine and highlight when the turbine needs servicing and repair.

Wind turbines are exposed to the elements and extreme weather conditions, and if they are are not maintained or monitored regularly, they can have the potential of causing serious property damage and injury to people. It is vital the manufacturer’s operating recommendations are adhered to, in addition to regular inspections and replacing worn parts.

We work with a range of wind turbine manufacturers who recognise our expertise in providing the high level of service that good quality manufacturers demand. For example, Northern Power Systems from the USA asked our team to travel to America last year to study and obtain their ‘Operations and Maintenance – Advanced Technician Level 2’ certification. We highly recommend Northern Power Systems wind turbines, and have worked on a lot of UK installations of these reliable machines. We regularly carry out Wind Turbine Repair and Maintenance work on a vast number of different types of machine.

We are proud to have an increasing portfolio of clients that own Argosy wind turbines. Unfortunately owners of these machines have experienced faults and breakdowns since their installation. As the manufacturers no longer exist (due to closure of their business), these customers have found it difficult to find the right company to call in to get their machines producing energy once again. They now call SJ1 Renewables, confident in our ability to find faults and fix the turbines quickly and effectively.

Another American company purchased the rights to the design of the Argosy machine. SJ1 Renewables have an agreement in place with this company which means they provide remote support and assist us to diagnose problems with these machines rapidly.

Our engineers cover the whole of the UK and are on call to assist with any Wind Turbine Repair and Maintenance issues, breakdown or servicing requirements that you may have. As we are independent we have expert knowledge of a large range of renewable energy products and systems used in the country, enabling us to provide support to all types of situations. All of our engineers are fully qualified and hold current BST GWO / Renewable UK Work at Height and Rescue (WAHR) certificates.

Package 1 – One-Off Health Check

We can provide a non-contract wind system maintenance visit., however, we strongly recommend that your system has a regular monitoring and maintenance program to avoid normal wear and tear developing into serious problems and possible dangerous situations. Before entering into an agreement, you may want to get to know us better or you may have some concerns that you would like our independent approach to address. Our wind technicians will visit your site, perform a visual inspection of your system and carry out relevant tests providing you with a written report that details any requirement for remedial or maintenance work. Keeping your turbine clean plays an incredibly important role in its maintenance. Generators can be impacted by rain, snow, dust, sand, moss, insects, oil contamination, pollution and bird spoil. We can perform a one-off, non contract annual clean (or as requested), for very reasonable rates. Please ask us about our cost for this service.

Package 2 – Remote Monitoring

This is a minimum 12 month contract. With our monitoring only option we provide real time monitoring of your wind system as well as an annual Health Check (Package 1). If your system goes offline or if any energy production issues occur, we will notify you within 24 hours.

This package allows you the confidence that any drop in generation will be identified rapidly, thus limiting any potential loss of revenue. You will receive generation reports on a monthly basis giving you a full understanding of your systems output all year round.

Package 3 – Operation and Maintenance Contract

Package 3 is a minimum 12 month contract and includes Packages 1 and 2 above. We provide monthly and annual production, breakdown, inspection and service reports. Preventative maintenance is scheduled in line with manufacturer recommendations or more frequently as requested. Reactive response times are as per contractual agreement. We have a fixed price for turbine servicing, including options for an allocated number of reactive callouts per year. Any repair visits required are covered as part of this package (not including consumables, parts, or travel).
