Grid Connection
Grid connections for renewable energy require thorough investigation and feasibility studies. We assess your specific requirements and carry out the necessary studies to ensure your system complies with a range of regulatory requirements. It is also important to understand the cost and feasibility of your new renewable energy project, as well as the grid’s ability to accommodate new generation. We provide an independent study to help assess your grid connection feasibility and support you in liaising with the transmission and distribution system network operators.
There are many factors which can affect a new connection; it depends on where a site is situated and the size of the proposed generator. The capacity of the electrical supply is important as it could mean there is limit to how much power we can connect. The District Network Operator (DNO) is responsible of the electrical infrastructure which supply our homes and businesses, and it is the DNO who examine the impact of a new generator on the local grid. We organise the connection of our generators as part of our service, and applications are made well in advance so the grid connection works are in place and ready for connection during the installation phase.
Connection Feasibility
Some potential issues we consider when assessing your system’s grid connection feasibility are:
- How the new scheme will affect existing fault levels
- Harmonic emissions which is any distortion generated by non-linear plant connections i.e. power converters
- If the network can accommodate new generation known as thermal capacity
- Voltage fluctuation created by changes in switching the electrical plant on and off causing variation in load
- Voltage load flow and rise / drop effected by the new scheme on the network
Where grid connection becomes problematic, we have engineered solutions to help – see our Energy Management Systems for more information. Our electrical connection services include:
- Site electrical assessment
- Grid strength assessment
- Line upgrade requests
- G59 connection applications
- Connection design (both LV and HV)
- Power controllers and site load management systems
Tailored Service
Through our analysis we identify any issues that are likely to obstruct your system’s connection, exploring options and identifying costs that could be incurred for your electrical system upgrade, which could include replacing overhead lines, cabling, switchgear, transformers, and any commercial implications connecting to the network. Our final report covers everything you need to know so you can make a clear decision on how to proceed.
If you are starting a renewable energy project you may have one or more of the above requirements, please contact us for prices.
